Can You Lay Patio in Your Whole Garden?

We know patios create beautiful outdoor sitting spaces that we’ll really enjoy. It’s even more enjoyable as there are different patio materials and sizes to choose from according to our needs.

We can choose whatever material we like for our future patio, but can we choose the patio to be of any size as per our wish or is it possible to have a patio in your entire garden.

You can have a patio laid in your whole garden no matter how big it is as long as you have a proper drainage system in place that doesn’t allow the water to run off the patio to the street or into your neighbour’s property.

Just to inform you that you can’t directly lay patio slabs over drainage or manhole covers because you’ll block them. You need recessed cover frames to have your patio over the manhole and drain because they’re still accessible and you don’t also have cutouts between your patio.

Drainage is the biggest factor to have a patio in whole garden

There’re the laws and regulations made on the proper drainage of water from the patios and driveways which led to massive floods around the UK in the year 2007.

The main concern with this type of project is with the drainage. You’ve to make proper arrangements for the water from the patio with a soakaway system.

As mentioned earlier, ensure that the water is going into the streets, other’s properties or foul water drainage.

However, for a patio project like this, it’s better to take professional advice just so you don’t have any legal or other possible problems like drainage down the road.

Do you even need a patio in your entire garden?

If you have a small garden space and you think that you would need to lay a patio in the whole garden to create a big enough space sitting area then you’ve no option other than building a patio in the entire garden.

But if you don’t actually need a patio as big as your garden then you’ll be putting a lot more money into it than what you don’t need to. It’s also possible that after hearing the quote or cost of having a patio in your entire garden, you will change your mind.

Because, even if you have an average size garden in the country UK, let’s say 150 square meters and the patio is costing £100/m2 for supply and fit on average. It’s usually way more depending on how much work is involved like digging and levelling as the land needs to be levelled before having a patio there. (Read about its cost here)

You’re already at £15,000 just to supply and lay a patio, no extra cost just the basic starting price that’s £100/m2 for a patio in the entire 150 sq. m. garden.

In Conclusion

Paving a patio in the entire garden makes sense if you have a small garden to create enough outdoor sitting space. But if this is not the case, get the grass, some beautiful plants, maybe a few trees which will truly enhance and create a much beautiful outdoor space that will enjoy more compared to only having a patio.
