Resin on top of Block Paving: Is it possible?

For just the sake of possibility, yes laying resin on top of block pavers can be done and can be done more quickly as there’s no need to prepare a proper base. So, lay resin on your existing block pavers only if you want a temporary driveway and not if you want to have it for years to come. Just kidding! Of course, you want it for years to come so, have a read below.

The short answer to this question is no, you can’t lay resin-bound on top of block paving because block paving is flexible meaning so, it can get uneven or some blocks can sink over time which can cause cracks in the above resin.

Resin-bound is the first choice of many professionals for driveways. Resin could be a fantastic option for your driveway if done properly but if you’re doing something like laying resin over existing block paving, then you’ll definitely have problems after a couple of years.

Many people do resin driveways in this way; laying on top of block paving which might seem easy but there will always be revisits whenever the block pavers fail if you’re doing it for someone else.

So, ripping the block pavers out is preferred for a new resin bound driveway. It is the proper way to do a resin driveway when there’s an existing block paved driveway.

Some professionals don’t even rely on other peoples sub-bases on which the existing block paving is laid because they just don’t want to have the problems anyway. So in that case, the job needs to be started from the beginning which includes a new proper sub-base and compacting for the resin to last.

Resin on top of Block Paving for Client

I’ve seen in Facebook groups, people are doing it as you can see in the picture above which is from one of the groups that I’m part of.

Most professionals who assure the quality of their jobs won’t do it but if you’re doing the resin driveway for someone else who wants you to lay the resin directly on top of the existing block paving, explain to them why ripping old block pavers out is important and also a new base if required.

If you’re thinking of making some extra cash by laying resin directly over block pavers, you’ll end up losing much more money in the long run as the word of mouth is a prominent source of clients if you’re doing quality jobs.

Most of the time they will agree as soon as they’ll realise that there’s no guarantee how long is it going to last and it’s definitely worth spending more time and money now on a proper job instead of doing it again and again.

If still, they don’t listen, it is better not to touch the site and walk away. But if want to get the job done somehow, tell them I’m not responsible if the resin starts cracking tomorrow.
